Assembly Member Monning Calls for an Investigation of Governor Schwarzenegger
Assembly Member Bill Monning offered a keynote address to a crowd of approximately 160 at the Salinas Valley Democratic Club dinner which was held on September 12th, at the Steinbeck Museum in Salinas. As always, Assembly Member Monning acknowledged the work of the community that has made progress on social issues possible.
Even as progress has been made at home, Assembly Member Monning expressed outrage at what he characterized as “the devolution of principled political debate in this country.” Monning called on every citizen to demand that media re-focus on issues which are the root causes of health care disparity in the United States.
Most notably, Assembly Member Monning called for an investigation of Governor Schwarzenegger for illegal vote trading and demanded that the Governor should weigh each bill on its own merits. Even though California has experienced a 30% drop in state revenues over the past year, Monning was able to point to specific areas where the legislature has made recent progress passing several bills that await the Governor’s signature. These bills address issues as diverse as insurance company abuses to renewable energy and they include the restoration of health care coverage to 600,000 children statewide. Yet, according to Monning, Schwarzenegger has threatened to veto all bills unless legislation the governor has called for is passed
