Equality Continues to be an Issue
The question of whether or not to amend the California State Constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman thereby closing off opportunities for same sex couples to marry was a contentious issue that promises not to go away, as is evident from the recent ACLU panel discussion held at the Monterey College of Law. The panel discussion, which was moderated by Attorney Michele Welsh featured a presentation by Elizabeth Gill, who is the staff attorney with the ACLU of Northern California and who was one of the attorneys in the Strauss V Horton case regarding Proposition 8 in the California Supreme Court. Other star panelists included attorney Katheryn Stoner who is a professor of family law and community property, Attorney Lisa Cisneros who is a founding member of Salinas Valley Equality, and Shena Gellander who is an ACLU field activist in Northern California.
