Speaker Pérez Anounced Goals and Welcomed New members
SACRAMENTO—Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles) convened the 2011-2012 session of the California State Assembly on December 6th when new and returning legislators were sworn-in for the upcoming two-year legislative session. California’s new Chief Justice, Tani Cantil-Sakauye, swore-in the 80 Assembly members elected in November, including 28 brand new members. It is the 106th time the Assembly has organized since 1849.
During the floor session, Speaker Pérez outlined the Assembly’s goals and objectives, including the need to address the state's ongoing budget problems. Speaker Pérez introduced legislation that will undo Governor Schwarzenegger’s veto of child care for 60,000 California families who have successfully moved from welfare to work. It is estimated the ultimate cost of the Governor’s veto would be three to five times more expensive to the state budget than providing the child care services. Speaker Pérez is also struck a blow for accountability and transparency when he introduced legislation to disincorporate the City of Vernon, which is the subject of multiple investigations. |
