CONFERENCE FOR PREVENTTION OF CONFLICT IN THE ARCTIC
REGION
Monterey, CA — On Dec. 8-9, the Center for Stabilization and Reconstruction Studies
(CSRS) at the Naval Postgraduate School in conjunction with Global Majority hosted a conference, “ON THIN ICE: Addressing the Scientific, Economic, Environmental, Cultural and Security Implications of
Climate Change in the Arctic Region”, in Monterey, to increase awareness and knowledge on the risks
and challenges developing in the Arctic region as the ocean waters become warmer and ice melts.
Over 200 officials from Arctic countries, government agencies, armed forces, environmental groups, intergovernmental
organizations and the shipping, oil, minerals, and fishing industries, as well as scientists and
indigenous peoples, met to explore methods to minimize conflict and confrontation among these
stakeholders in the Arctic region.
Participants were provided a scientific assessment of the best-projected future of climate change in the
Arctic region, a political and diplomatic overview of the region, and opportunities to identify mutually
advantageous solutions to potential areas of confrontation.
